NAUI or PADI: What's the difference and which scuba certification should you choose?
You've decided to learn how to SCUBA dive? Amazing! Exciting! Thrilling! Now comes your next decision, which organization to obtain certification from. There are hundreds of organizations globally that offer SCUBA certifications, but the most common ones you'll see are NAUI and PADI. We'll break down their similarities, differences, and how to decide which is right for you. Regardless of which you choose, it's important to know both are respected, internationally recognized certifications.
NAUI vs. PADI at a Glance
NAUI - National Association of Underwater Instructors

- Founded in 1960
- Internationally recognized certification
- Strong emphasis on diver knowledge and skill mastery
- Allows instructors flexibility in how they teach the required material
- Great for students who appreciate personalized instruction
- A great fit for divers who want a thorough, flexible and instructor-guided learning experience.
PADI - Professional Association of Diving Instructors

- Founded in 1966
- Internationally recognized certification
- Highly standardized training system
- Extensive digital learning options
- Large selection of continuing education and specialty courses
- A great fit for divers who prefer structured digital learning and a widely familiar certification system.
What Do Both Courses Have in Common?
Both organizations offer a beginner level Open Water course. They include knowledge development, confined-water or pool training, and open-water certification dives. You'll also practice using real scuba equipment and receive training in essential safety and emergency procedures. These are topics essential for all divers to understand and both organizations will prepare you to the highest industry standards.
These certifications do not expire, though if you find yourself out of practice for a few years, it is recommended to take a refresher course just to get back in the swing of things.
Can I Switch Between NAUI and PADI?
Yes. You do not have to stay with the same training agency throughout your entire diving journey. For example, a diver who completes Open Water with NAUI may be eligible to take their next course through PADI, and vice versa. Your instructor will review your current certification and experience to make sure you meet the requirements for the next course.
What Matters More Than the Agency?
Who you train with can have the biggest impact on your success. The quality of your instructor, the amount of support you receive, and how comfortable you feel during training can take you from feeling okay with your experience to a highly-skilled and confident diver.
A good dive shop should offer:
- Patient, experienced instructors
- A welcoming and supportive environment
- Well-maintained rental equipment
- Equipment sales, service and repairs
- Air, nitrox and pure-air fills
- Continuing-education up to leadership opportunities
- World class dive travel
- An active dive community & dive club
- Support after your certification is complete
